Orphan Sponsorship Dinner
It's that time of year again! No...Not Christmas guys, the Orphan Sponsorship Dinner! Last year, we were able to support 23 orphans around the world. This time, we're hoping to raise enough money to sponsor 24 or more orphans which means we need all of you guys to attend the dinner this Saturday at the Senior Center from 7-9 pm! There will be hilarious entertainment, amazing speakers from our community, and delicious catered food. Tickets are available from any MSA board member at Jummah and the ice-cream social which is open to everyone this Wednesday.
Students: $5
Individuals: $10
Family: $25
Please invite your friends and family to help ease the hardships of these kids. And remember, the prophet, peace be upon him, said, "Whoever supports an orphan from among his own or any other family, he will be as close to me in Heaven as these fingers are close to each other." He then made a motion of his index and middle fingers (while he said this) and there was only a little space between the two.
So be there, inshaAllah! Check out the Facebook event!

Monday: New Muslim Cool
To kick off IAW 2011, the MSA will be screening the new documentary entitled "New Muslim Cool". Here's a short synopsis of it:
Puerto Rican American rapper Hamza Pérez ended his life as a drug dealer 12 years ago, and started down a new path as a young Muslim. Now he’s moved to Pittsburgh’s tough North Side to start a new religious community, rebuild his shattered family, and take his message of faith to other young people through his uncompromising music as part of the hip-hop duo M-Team. Raising his two kids as a single dad and longing for companionship, Hamza finds love on a Muslim networking website and seizes the chance for happiness in a second marriage. But when the FBI raids his mosque, Hamza must confront the realities of the post-9/11 world, and challenge himself. He starts reaching for a deeper understanding of his faith, discovering new connections with people from Christian and Jewish communities.
NEW MUSLIM COOL takes viewers on Hamza’s ride through the streets, projects and jail cells of urban America, following his spiritual journey to some surprising places — where we can all see ourselves reflected in a world that never stops changing. Ibrahim's dedication to the environment is rooted in his deen, or his religion of Islam. He is an environmental policy consultant who has worked with Green For All, Green City Force, Interfaith Leaders for Environmental Justice, The Prospect Park Alliance, and The New York City Mayor's Office of Long Term Planning & Sustainability. Ibrahim is also a youth organizer and co-author of Future 500: Youth Organizing and Activism in the United States. He is the brain behind the blog Brooklyn Bedouin and media personality on WNYC's nationally-syndicated radio show The Takeaway. Abdul-Matin's writing has also been published in ColorLines, WireTap Magazine, and Left Turn.

Tuesday: Images of Hope - A Woman's Journey to Palestine & Back
This is a lecture given by Julia Hurley. She is the Public Education and Outreach Associate at the American Association for Palestinian Equal Rights (AAPER).
Following the September 11 attacks on the United States, Julia became a staunch conservative who was 'afraid of Arabs' and supportive of Israel's policy toward Palestinians. But, in the years that followed, her perspective completely changed. She dedicated herself to better understanding Palestine and the Middle East by speaking to Palestinians, studying their conditions while earning her Bachelor of Science in Diplomacy and International Relations at the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy at Seton Hall University, and visiting Palestine and Egypt, where she studied Arabic at the American University of Cairo.
Julia has traveled to the West Bank three times since 2007; visited Gaza in December 2009, bringing with her $17,000-worth of school supplies, clothes, medicine and toys; and is scheduled to return to Gaza in May 2011 at the invitation of the United Nations Relief Works Agency. Today, Julia works for Palestinian rights, and has committed her life to seeking freedom and equality in Palestine, peace in the Middle East and long-term security for the United States. Hear about the speaker's her experiences in Palestine, and her current work on behalf of Palestinian human rights.
When: 7-8:30PM

Professor Gade teaches in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia and the Religious Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is also a faculty member of the Center for Culture, History, and Environment. Fright Fest at Six Flags
Hope you all had a great time at the Outdoor Fun Day! If you did, then get excited, because we have another awesome event in store for you. If you didn't, you should still be excited, because this event is going to be even MORE awesome.
On Saturday, October 30th, the UW MSA will be heading to Six Flags for Fright Fest! Hold on to your hijabs, guys, because it's going to be one of the most fun (and terrifying) events of the semester. If you love rollercoasters and zombies, then make sure to RSVP BY MIDNIGHT, OCTOBER 23RD by emailing Besma or Zeeshan, because the number of people that are attending will affect ticket prices. The more people, the cheaper the tickets, guys! If we have a group of more than 20, tickets are just $30, otherwise they are $37.
Don't worry about driving, because we're also going to be providing rides (another reason you need to RSVP ASAP!). We'll be leaving from the Islamic Center at 10:00 AM on the 30th. Be there or be square!
